Ottawa Redblacks Select Giordano Vaccaro First Overall in 2026 CFL Draft
Redblacks Pick Vaccaro First in CFL Draft

The Ottawa Redblacks selected Giordano Vaccaro with the first overall pick in the 2026 CFL draft on Tuesday night, a decision that head coach and general manager Ryan Dinwiddie had been confident about for some time.

Dinwiddie praised Vaccaro, a 6-foot-3, 315-pound offensive lineman from Winnipeg, calling him the best available player at his position. He emphasized Vaccaro's physical style and finishing ability, noting that the Redblacks are aiming to transform their offensive identity.

Vaccaro played three seasons at the University of Manitoba as a left tackle and guard before transferring to Purdue University in the NCAA last season. He appeared in 12 games for the Boilermakers, including 30 snaps against the eventual national champion Indiana Hoosiers.

The Redblacks plan to use Vaccaro primarily as a guard but see potential for him to play center. Dinwiddie stated they will ease him into the role to avoid overwhelming him with line calls initially.

Speaking on TSN from a draft party in his hometown, Vaccaro described the moment as surreal and called the call from Ottawa the best of his life. He promised to bring a humble, hardworking attitude and described himself as a mauler ready to contribute from day one.

In a second-round trade, Ottawa sent the 10th pick to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for the 13th pick and a second-round selection in 2027. With the 13th pick, the Redblacks selected fullback Emeric Boutin from Laval University.
