The Toronto Maple Leafs introduced their new general manager John Chayka and senior executive adviser Mats Sundin on Monday, unveiling the revamped front-office leadership. However, the introductory press conference took an unexpected turn when Toronto Sun sports columnist Steve Simmons posed a pointed question to MLSE president and CEO Keith Pelley.
Simmons Challenges Pelley on Due Diligence
Simmons asked Pelley about the due diligence conducted before hiring Chayka, the former GM of the Arizona Coyotes. The columnist claimed he had spoken to 20 prominent NHL insiders, with only one supporting the hiring and the other 19 calling it a sham, using words like 'con artist,' 'liar,' and 'salesman.'
Pelley responded briefly, stating he must have talked to different people. Simmons pressed further, saying the hockey world was astounded by the announcement. Pelley reiterated that the organization had done deep due diligence before moving on.
Chayka's Controversial Past
Chayka left the Coyotes in July 2020 under a cloud, receiving a one-year suspension for conduct detrimental to the league. The team also forfeited two draft picks for hosting an illegal private scouting combine. These factors have made his hiring a lightning rod for criticism.
Social Media Reaction
The exchange quickly went viral, with many fans backing Simmons for asking a tough question. One user posted, 'Good for Simmons. He asked the question that 75% of this fan base was thinking.' Another wrote, 'This was insane. Wow! Steve Simmons coming in with heat.'
On Reddit, users generally supported the question, with one noting, 'I don't like Steve, but this was needed.' Another joked they would 'never forgive Pelley for creating a situation where I agree with Steve Simmons.' Some observers also noted Sundin's reaction, with one person saying, 'Mats having war flashbacks after that lol.'
Criticism of Simmons' Approach
Not everyone approved. Some felt Simmons went too far, especially with Chayka's family present. One user wrote, 'There is a way to address hard topics without being so nasty and offensive.' Tara Slone, a host for NBC's Sharks coverage, called it 'unconscionable behavior.'
Simmons' History of Controversy
Steve Simmons is Canada's longest-serving sports columnist, writing for the Toronto Sun and Postmedia for 38 years. He began his career in Calgary before moving to Toronto in 1987. This isn't his first contentious Leafs press conference moment; in 2013, he had a terse exchange with then-GM Brian Burke, who said, 'The best part about today, Steve, is that I probably don't ever have to talk to you again.'
The Chayka hiring remains a divisive topic, with the press conference exchange highlighting deep skepticism within the hockey community.
