Corey Conners Finds His Form at Players Championship with Impressive Opening Round

In a display of skill and resilience, Canadian golfer Corey Conners kicked off the 2026 Players Championship with a standout performance, carding a three-under-par 69 in the first round. This strong start marks a return to form for Conners, who has faced a slower-than-usual beginning to the season.

Precision and Poise on a Challenging Course

Conners showcased his trademark ball-striking prowess at the notoriously difficult TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. He navigated the course with exceptional accuracy, hitting 12 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation. His round was nearly flawless, marred only by a single bogey, allowing him to finish the day in a tie for 10th place.

"Pretty stress-free, honestly," Conners remarked to Postmedia after his round, which concluded as darkness fell. "I hit a lot of solid shots. My driver was working great." The Listowel, Ontario native expressed satisfaction with his performance, noting that it felt good to play the type of golf that has endeared him to Canadian fans.

Favorable Conditions and Strategic Play

Conners benefited from ideal playing conditions after a lunch-hour rain delay softened the course. "I got pretty lucky with the weather," he admitted. "It was a very nice evening to be playing golf, it really got quite nice for the last nine holes. The course softened up definitely after the rain." This advantage allowed him to capitalize on his strengths, focusing on driving accuracy and creating birdie opportunities.

His three-under score led the six-man Canadian contingent at the tournament. He trails the leaders—Maverick McNealy, Sepp Straka, Sahith Theegala, Lee Hodges, and Austin Smotherman—by just two strokes. Smotherman has a chance to move to six-under when play resumes on Friday morning.

Canadian Contingent's Mixed Results

Other Canadian golfers had varying degrees of success in the opening round:

  • Mackenzie Hughes, Nick Taylor, and Taylor Pendrith all shot matching two-over 74s.
  • Rookies Sudarshan Yellamaraju and A.J. Ewart were on the 18th hole when play was suspended, with scores of +1 and +5, respectively.

Meanwhile, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler shot an even-par round, and defending champion Rory McIlroy struggled with a two-over 74 while battling a back injury.

Looking Ahead

Conners' performance at TPC Sawgrass, a course he describes as one of his favorites, signals a promising turn in his season. "I feel like I've played well here in the past and I love this golf course," he said. As the tournament progresses, fans will be watching to see if he can maintain this momentum and contend for the title.

This strong start not only highlights Conners' skill but also reinforces his position as a key figure in Canadian golf, inspiring hope for a successful campaign at one of the PGA Tour's most prestigious events.
