Red Wings Prospect Finally Joins Spitfires After Year-Long Pursuit
Red Wings Prospect Svrcek Signs with Spitfires

After a year-long pursuit, the Windsor Spitfires have finally secured the commitment of Detroit Red Wings prospect Michal Svrcek. The Slovakian forward signed a standard OHL scholarship and development agreement for the 2026-27 season, the club announced on Thursday.

Long-Awaited Signing

“We’re thrilled to get Michal to the Spits,” said Windsor general manager Bill Bowler. The Red Wings selected Svrcek in the fourth round of the 2025 NHL Draft, and the Spitfires made him a first-round pick in the CHL Import Draft days later.

The Spitfires had hoped Svrcek would join them last season, but he opted to return to Sweden to play for Brynas IF. “We knew, when we selected him, that he was under contract and not something you typically (can get out of),” Bowler said. “We were confident it would (eventually) happen and it did.”

International Experience

Svrcek represented Slovakia at the World Junior Hockey Championship and played for Brynas IF, the under-20 team, and Vasteras IK in Sweden. Reflecting on his decision, the 19-year-old said, “I think I regret the decision I didn’t come (to Windsor last season), but I’m looking forward to coming (this) season.”

The five-foot-11, 190-pound forward is known for his energy and forechecking ability. “He’s a bit of everything,” Bowler said. “He’s a world junior player and an NHL pick, so he’ll play in every situation and create offence with his energy. He plays in all three zones and plays any style of game.”

Filling the Void

The Spitfires had hoped to pair Svrcek with Jack Nesbitt and Ethan Belchetz, but both forwards have moved on to the NCAA. “This was very important (signing to get done) and we anticipated this would happen,” Bowler said. “He was supposed to be part of this year’s team with other players, but you play the hand you’re dealt.”

Svrcek will look to help fill the void left by those departures. “I’m really excited and hoping for a breakout season,” said Svrcek, who has not yet signed his entry-level deal with Detroit. “(The Red Wings) are close to Windsor, so it’s really nice. They can watch me a full year and I’ll try my best to show I can play there.”

Future Plans

With Kazakhstan forward Beks Makysh also on the roster, the Spitfires have two of their three import spots filled. They will likely aim to fill the third spot during the CHL Import Draft on June 30.

“I think I’m a fast winger who can score and be all-around there,” Svrcek said. “It’s going to be faster there, but I’m looking forward to it. I like to battle. I’m not the tallest, but I can play along the boards and I like to play physical.”
