Anton Frondell Set for NHL Debut with Blackhawks

Anton Frondell, the highly-touted No. 3 overall selection in the 2025 NHL Draft, is poised to make his long-awaited debut with the Chicago Blackhawks this week. The announcement comes as the Blackhawks continue their rebuilding efforts, with Frondell expected to join the team imminently after wrapping up his season in Sweden.

Journey from Sweden to Chicago

Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill confirmed before Sunday's matchup against the Nashville Predators that Frondell was en route from his native Sweden to Chicago. "We hope as soon as possible," Blashill stated, highlighting the organization's eagerness to integrate the young forward into the lineup. While Blashill did not explicitly confirm that Frondell would skate alongside third-year star center Connor Bedard, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft, he assured that Frondell would "be with a good player, for sure."

A Standout Season in the Swedish Hockey League

Following his signing to a three-year, entry-level contract with the Blackhawks last summer, Frondell was loaned to Djurgardens of the Swedish Hockey League, Sweden's premier professional league. In an impressive rookie campaign, Frondell appeared in 43 games, becoming only the fourth 18-year-old in SHL history to score 20 goals. He is the first to achieve this feat since Daniel Sedin accomplished it during the 1998-99 season.

Frondell's season was marked by consistent excellence and clutch performances. After helping Sweden capture the gold medal at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in January—where he scored the game-winning goal in a shootout against Finland—he maintained his strong form with Djurgardens. He found the back of the net in 10 of his final 18 regular-season games before his team was eliminated in a first-round playoff series on Saturday.

Immediate Impact Expected

Coach Blashill indicated that Frondell's exact debut date would be determined on Monday, as the team works through logistical details such as flight arrangements. "We're just working through flights, stuff like that," Blashill explained. "I know he wants to get here. We want to get him here."

Once Frondell arrives, he is expected to receive significant ice time for the rebuilding Blackhawks, who entered Sunday with a record of 26-31-12, placing them 30th overall in the 32-team NHL. Blashill emphasized his confidence in Frondell's readiness, stating, "Probably in his situation, based on the level of play he's had all year, how well he's played the last part of the year ... I'm a 'gonna throw him into the fire' kind of coach."

Blackhawks' Upcoming Schedule and Additional Roster Moves

The Blackhawks are set to embark on a four-game road trip, facing the New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers, and New Jersey Devils, beginning on Tuesday. Frondell's debut could coincide with this crucial stretch of games.

In addition to Frondell, the Blackhawks anticipate the arrival of forward Sacha Boisvert, one of their three first-round picks in the 2024 draft. The 20-year-old from Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, signed a three-year contract last week and is awaiting immigration clearance after concluding his season with Boston University. His impending addition further underscores Chicago's commitment to infusing young talent into their roster as they look toward the future.
