Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin Reportedly Dismissed

Patrik Allvin has been removed from his position as general manager of the Vancouver Canucks, as reported by Swedish media outlet Aftonbladet. Veteran reporter Thomas Ros broke the news on Friday morning in Sweden, which corresponds to Thursday evening in Vancouver. This development follows intense speculation about Allvin's future with the team after a disappointing season.

Background and Tenure of Allvin

Allvin was hired in January 2022 by Jim Rutherford, the president of hockey operations for the Canucks. He made history as the first Swedish general manager in NHL history, having previously worked with Rutherford in Pittsburgh, where he served as chief scout and later as an assistant general manager. During his tenure, the Canucks showed initial promise, narrowly missing the playoffs in 2022 and 2023 before advancing to the second round in the 2023-24 season, where they lost in seven games to the Edmonton Oilers.

Recent Struggles and Organizational Turmoil

However, the team's performance declined sharply in subsequent seasons. A significant rift between key players J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson during the 2024-25 season led to Miller's trade, destabilizing the roster. Despite acquiring players like Filip Chytil and Marcus Pettersson, the Canucks failed to maintain consistency and missed the playoffs. Further setbacks included head coach Rick Tocchet declining a contract offer and leaving the organization after winning the Jack Adams trophy in 2023-24.

Allvin attempted to rebuild the team in the summer of 2024 by signing free agents such as Jake DeBrusk and Derek Forbort, but the season spiraled into disaster. Tocchet's departure was compounded by concerns over Quinn Hughes' future and organizational instability. To replace Tocchet, Allvin and Rutherford hired Adam Foote, whose limited coaching experience and early-season injuries to key players like Forbort and Chytil contributed to the team's struggles.

Leadership Changes and Trade Decisions

Notably, Rutherford took charge of negotiations for a Hughes trade in December, signaling potential doubts about Allvin's deal-making abilities. Despite this, Allvin remained involved in other trades, moving veterans like David Kampf and Tyler Myers before the deadline. The Canucks' failure to qualify for the playoffs for the third time in four seasons ultimately led to Allvin's reported dismissal.

Allvin and Rutherford have been requested for comments on the situation, but no official statements have been released yet. The future of the Canucks' management and roster remains uncertain as the team looks to regroup after this significant change.
