CFL Draft Day Overshadowed by Drastic Playoff Changes for 2027
CFL Draft Overshadowed by Playoff Changes for 2027

The Canadian Football League (CFL) draft day was overshadowed by the announcement of drastic playoff changes set to take effect in 2027. The new format, resembling the modified Page system used in curling, will see eight of the league's nine teams qualify for the postseason, effectively devaluing the regular season. Craig Reynolds, CEO and president of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, expressed support for the changes, noting that they make winning the Grey Cup even more challenging.

New Playoff Format Details

Under the revised structure, the top two teams will receive a bye to the semifinals, while teams placed third through sixth will compete in a single-elimination quarterfinal round. The winners of the quarterfinals will then face the top seeds, with the two semifinal winners advancing to the Grey Cup. This system mirrors the convoluted drop-down, second-chance playoff format used in curling bonspiels, which Curling Canada has employed to generate additional revenue.

Reactions and Implications

Reynolds acknowledged that the new format places a premium on regular-season seeding. "I acknowledge that there's some thinking around that," he said. "The reality is that the seeding is gonna be really, really important." The CFL Players' Association has staunchly supported the changes, but traditionalists are concerned about the diminished importance of the regular season, where only one of nine teams will be eliminated.

Other Rule Changes for 2026 and 2027

In addition to the playoff overhaul, the CFL is planning significant rule changes for 2026, including adjustments to timing between plays and the elimination of rouges for kicks through the end zone. For 2027, the playing field will be shortened from 110 yards to 100 yards, with end zones reduced from 20 to 15 yards deep. The goal posts will be moved from the front goal line to the back of the end zone, eliminating the 55-yard line.

Season Schedule Shift

The regular season will start earlier, on the Victoria Day long weekend in May, with the 2027 Grey Cup scheduled for November 7 at Mosaic Stadium in Regina. Reynolds emphasized the benefits of the earlier start, citing better weather and increased fan attendance. "At-home experiences are really good, and in terms of television, late in the season, you have an ability to watch at home or make that choice. Obviously the weather is much better earlier in the season," he said.

While the changes have sparked debate among fans and analysts, Reynolds remains optimistic, stating, "It's already hard to win the Grey Cup. I think this makes it harder. Last year we were advantaged by finishing first and we won one game to get to the Grey Cup. Now you have to win two."
