Flames' Joel Farabee Aims for 20th Goal, But Season's Success Already Defined
Calgary Flames forward Joel Farabee enters Thursday's final game of the 2025-26 NHL season with 19 goals, just one shy of the 20-goal milestone. However, the 26-year-old winger emphasizes that his season won't be defined by whether he reaches that particular number.
"It's just cool to look back, and I've been lucky enough to score 20 twice and to do it again would be cool," Farabee said. "I've been in this situation before where it's come down to the last game, so hopefully I can string something together."
From Struggle to Success Story
Farabee's journey this season represents one of the Flames' most positive developments. Acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers in late January 2025, the forward initially struggled to find his footing in Calgary. He described his performance last April as "embarrassing" during end-of-season media sessions.
The past twelve months have brought dramatic improvement. With one game remaining, Farabee has compiled 19 goals and 18 assists while establishing himself as one of Calgary's most effective penalty killers. He has appeared in all 81 games this season and, following the departures of key veterans like Rasmus Andersson, Nazem Kadri, and MacKenzie Weegar, has embraced an expanded leadership role within the team.
More Than Just Goals
Farabee's value extends far beyond goal-scoring statistics. His consistent presence on the ice, defensive contributions, and growing leadership have positioned him as an important building block for the Flames' future. Whether he scores one more goal on Thursday against the Los Angeles Kings doesn't diminish these accomplishments.
"The game's hard enough in itself, so you can't really be focusing on stuff like that," Farabee explained. "Maybe if it got to an empty net situation somebody would be looking for me, but really it's just business as usual. You go out and play."
Team Support for Milestones
While the Flames won't alter their gameplay specifically to help players reach statistical milestones, teammates and coaches recognize the significance of these achievements. Blake Coleman recently scored his 20th goal of the season on Tuesday, while Morgan Frost has reached 21 goals. Matt Coronato sits at 18 goals with one game remaining.
Flames head coach Ryan Huska acknowledged the importance of these markers: "Really nice, we want Farabee to get there, as well. Those things matter, they really do. They're milestones for players that they all care about and their teammates want to see them achieve it."
A Season of Growth
Regardless of Thursday's outcome, Farabee's season represents significant personal and professional growth. His transformation from a struggling newcomer to a reliable two-way player and emerging leader demonstrates his development within the Flames organization.
"Yeah, I've been trying really hard," Farabee said. "That's all you can really ask, is just try your best. It's been fun. It was nice to see (Blake Coleman) get it and I thought I had a couple chances. I'll be shooting everything tomorrow. It would be cool to get it, but I don't really weigh my season on whether I get it."
As the Flames conclude their season and look toward future development, Farabee's contributions this year—whether he finishes with 19 or 20 goals—have already established him as a valuable asset in Calgary's rebuilding process.
