Calgary Flames Rookie Matvei Gridin Earns 'The Play-Caller' Moniker
In the past decade, only three teenagers have recorded multi-goal campaigns for the Calgary Flames: Sam Bennett, Matthew Tkachuk, and now, Matvei Gridin. The latest addition to this exclusive club has quickly made his mark, not just with his scoring prowess but with his vocal presence on the ice.
The Origin of the Nickname
Following a recent victory at the Scotiabank Saddledome, Flames forward Morgan Frost revealed with a wide smile that he has dubbed his 19-year-old linemate 'The Play-Caller.' This nickname stems from Gridin's confident demeanor and his willingness to speak up during crucial moments in games.
"It's because before faceoffs, we always talk about what we want to do," Gridin explained after a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks. "And I say, 'Let's do shooter.' So now he calls me 'The Play-Caller.'"
A New Era for NHL Rookies
Gone are the days when rookies were expected to be seen and not heard, quietly following orders without question. While some traditions, like collecting pucks after practice, may still apply, the Flames organization appreciates Gridin's self-assured approach. He carries the confidence of a player who believes he belongs in the NHL and can make a significant impact.
Frost, who at 26 years old scored a goal and assisted on one of Gridin's tallies while winning 15 of 18 faceoffs in a standout performance against the Sharks, chuckled when discussing his role as a mentor to the teenage sensation.
"He's still got his own opinions. He doesn't always listen to me," Frost quipped. "No, I'm just kidding... He's super skilled and he wants to make plays out there. I've been giving it to him a little, jokingly, but I think we are having fun on the bench and in the room. So hopefully we can keep that going."
Chemistry on the Top Line
In their three games together, the line of Frost, Gridin, and veteran Jonathan Huberdeau has emerged as the Flames' most dangerous offensive unit. During their five-on-five shifts, they have consistently out-shot and out-chanced opponents by a significant margin, controlling more than 60 percent of both shot attempts and scoring opportunities.
Gridin expressed his enthusiasm for playing alongside his more experienced teammates: "I love playing with them. Obviously, they're two great players. They can make a pass. They can make a play. So it's fun to play with them. I think we have pretty good chemistry."
This chemistry was evident in Gridin's goal against the Sharks. The rookie expertly drifted away from veteran defenseman Dmitry Orlov, positioning himself perfectly at the top of the right circle. Frost delivered a precise pass, and Gridin finished with a smooth, one-timer shot.
Looking Ahead
The trio aims to maintain their momentum as they prepare for upcoming matchups, including a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Frost added, "He's going to be a great player. He's already pretty good. I think if you stick him with anyone, he'd be good. But I like to play offence, as well, so I've enjoyed playing with him so far."
As Matvei Gridin continues to develop his game and solidify his place in the NHL, his nickname 'The Play-Caller' serves as a testament to his growing influence and the respect he has earned from his teammates in a short period of time.
