Matt Savoie Ready to Elevate His Game for Edmonton Oilers Playoff Run
Edmonton Oilers forward Matt Savoie has demonstrated remarkable versatility and skill during his rookie NHL season, amassing 37 points while averaging 15 minutes per game. His ability to contribute both offensively and defensively has made him a valuable asset as the team prepares for their playoff series against the Anaheim Ducks, starting Monday.
Versatility and Performance
"I think I've shown I can play up and down the lineup, scoring, providing sound defence. I've been juggled around, right-wing, left-wing. I'm comfortable playing with whomever," said Savoie, highlighting his adaptability. He played all 82 regular-season games, recording 19 points in the last 26 games from February onward, including a hat trick against the Vancouver Canucks on April 16, 2026.
His performance has caught the attention of teammates and coaches alike. Oilers captain Connor McDavid praised Savoie's development, noting, "He's done a great job of rounding out his game first from his net out. He's as solid defensively as anybody, great on the PK and he's starting to figure out the offensive thing a little bit." McDavid emphasized Savoie's motor and speed as key attributes, with the young forward adding more puck touches as the season progressed.
Playoff Lineup Implications
With Leon Draisaitl returning from a knee injury and Jason Dickinson dealing with an ankle issue, lineup adjustments are imminent. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who filled in at center during Draisaitl's absence, may shift to left wing or third-line center, potentially opening a spot for Savoie on the top lines. Coach Kris Knoblauch has expressed trust in Savoie, utilizing him in various roles, including power play and penalty kill situations.
Savoie's rookie campaign included 18 goals, with the fifth-most minutes among Oilers forwards, behind only McDavid, Draisaitl, Nugent-Hopkins, and Vasily Podkolzin. He led all forwards in shifts with 1,623, trailing only defensemen Evan Bouchard, Darnell Nurse, and Mattias Ekholm, plus McDavid. His penalty-kill contributions were significant, as he was one of six Oilers to play every game this season.
Coach and Team Confidence
Knoblauch commended Savoie's season, stating, "Matt had a tremendous year…the goals he scored, moving his way onto the top line, playing power play and a key guy on the penalty-kill all season." This trust has positioned Savoie as a likely starter on left wing with Zach Hyman on the right side as the playoffs begin.
The Oilers' playoff readiness was showcased in their final regular-season game, where they dominated the Canucks. Savoie's growth since his 2024 trade from the Buffalo Sabres, which sent Ryan McLeod the other way, suggests he is only scratching the surface of his potential. As the team gears up for the postseason, his all-around game and flexibility will be crucial in navigating the coaching chess moves that define playoff hockey.
