Moose Jaw Warriors Dominate Regina Pat Canadians in Pivotal Telus Cup Clash
The intense rivalry between the Moose Jaw Warriors and Regina Pat Canadians reached a critical juncture on Friday night as the Warriors delivered a commanding 6-2 victory at the packed Co-Operators Centre. This win secured Moose Jaw's berth in Sunday's Telus Cup west regional final, while pushing Regina into a must-win situation against the Winnipeg Bruins.
A Season-Long Battle Culminates in Decisive Victory
These teams have faced each other ten times this season across regular league play and championship series, creating what Warriors player Ryder Gilroy described as a unique rivalry. "It definitely feels good to beat these guys for sure: The rivalry. So there's really no feeling like it compared to any other team," Gilroy remarked after the game, having transitioned from forward to defender for this crucial matchup.
The game began competitively with both teams tied 2-2 after the first period. Riley Brown and Chase Petersen found the net for Moose Jaw, while Maddox Schultz scored both goals for Regina. The turning point came midway through the second period when Carson Deichert scored a shorthanded goal that ultimately proved to be the game-winner.
Third Period Dominance Seals the Outcome
Moose Jaw extended their lead in the final period with additional goals from Ryan Gibbs, Maxx Fuessel, and Maxon Johnston, demonstrating their offensive depth and determination. The Warriors now sit atop the four-team round-robin standings with a perfect 2-0 record, while Regina dropped to 1-1.
Regina Pat Canadians head coach Ryan Hodgins acknowledged the competitive nature of the matchup, stating, "We talked about this for the last week or two. It's not a surprise that we're gonna have battles like that. Nobody likes losing. I hope they don't feel good about it. I'm positive they don't."
Path to the Regional Final
The round-robin format means only the top two teams qualify for Sunday's championship game. Regina now faces the Winnipeg Bruins on Saturday afternoon in what amounts to an elimination game. Winnipeg enters with a 1-1 record after defeating the Thunder Bay Kings 7-2 on Friday.
Meanwhile, Moose Jaw plays their final round-robin game against winless Thunder Bay in what Warriors head coach Trevor Weisgerber described as an opportunity to "take care of business" to avoid complications in the standings. When asked about potentially facing Regina again in the final, Weisgerber remained pragmatic: "I'm indifferent. I'd be OK playing someone else, but if it's them Sunday...whoever it is, if we get there, we'll be just happy to play whoever we get."
National Championship Implications
Sunday's regional final winner will advance to the male under-18 national hockey championship, scheduled for October 20-26 in Peterborough, Ontario. Regina enters this tournament as the reigning Telus Cup champion, adding extra significance to their quest for a return to the national stage.
The Warriors' victory not only secured their place in the regional final but also extended their season-long competition with Regina to what could become an eleventh meeting if both teams advance. As Gilroy noted about the rivalry, "We've probably still got one more on Sunday against 'em, so we'll be sick of 'em after that," capturing the intensity of this extended hockey battle.
