Edmonton Oilers defenceman Evan Bouchard was knocked unconscious during Thursday's IIHF World Championship quarterfinal game between Canada and the United States in Fribourg, Switzerland. The incident occurred when Bouchard was elbowed in the head by American forward Ryan Lindgren of the Seattle Kraken. Bouchard did not see the hit coming, fell to the ice, and lay motionless before being helped off by trainers. He did not return to the game, and it is unlikely he will play again in the tournament.
Concussion Concerns
This is a significant blow for Bouchard, as once a player suffers a major head injury, they become more susceptible to future concussions. Many NHL careers have been cut short due to concussion-related issues. The Oilers will be closely monitoring his recovery.
Tournament Performance
Bouchard had been having an outstanding tournament, recording one goal and six assists with a plus-14 rating in seven games, continuing his strong offensive play from the NHL season.
Lindgren was ejected from the game, and no Canadian player retaliated. The Oilers are expected to keep this incident in mind when they face the Kraken in the upcoming NHL season.
Earlier reports that Bouchard suffered a concussion in Edmonton's playoff series against the Anaheim Ducks were false.
