The Edmonton Oilers are not done yet. Facing elimination in Game 5 of their first-round Stanley Cup playoff series against the Anaheim Ducks, the Oilers delivered a resounding 4-1 victory on home ice Tuesday night at Rogers Place. The win keeps their season alive and sends a chilling message to the Ducks: this team is dangerous when backed into a corner.
A dominant first period sets the tone
From the opening puck drop, the Oilers played with desperation and intensity. They scored three goals in the first period, chasing Ducks goaltender Lukas Dostal from the net. Vasily Podkolzin opened the scoring at 2:22 on Edmonton's first shot of the game. Zach Hyman extended the lead at 8:33, and Leon Draisaitl added another at 10:31. The shots were 12-2 Edmonton before the period ended, leaving the crowd in a frenzy.
Key players step up
Connor McDavid, who was a game-time decision due to injury, played on a new line with Draisaitl and Kasperi Kapanen. McDavid recorded two assists, while Draisaitl finished with two goals. Evan Bouchard contributed three assists, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins added two. Goaltender Connor Ingram, making a start in place of the usual netminder, made clutch saves to keep Anaheim at bay.
The Ducks pushed back in the second period, cutting the lead to 3-1 on a power-play goal. But the Oilers responded with a power-play goal of their own from Draisaitl to restore a three-goal cushion heading into the third period.
Series shifts to Anaheim for Game 6
With the series now 3-2 in favor of the Ducks, the Oilers have forced a Game 6 in Anaheim on Thursday. The pressure shifts to the Ducks, who must close out the series at home or face a decisive Game 7 back in Edmonton. The Oilers have shown they can win when it matters most, and they will look to steal another game on the road.
Step one of the comeback is complete. Step two: win Game 6 and bring the series back to Edmonton.
