Regina Pats GM Derkatch Fires Coaching Staff Despite Stability Emphasis

In a surprising move that contradicts recent statements about organizational stability, Regina Pats general manager Dale Derkatch has dismissed head coach Brad Herauf and associate coach Ryan Smith. The decision comes just days after Derkatch publicly emphasized the importance of continuity for WHL teams striving for perennial success.

Coaching Change Follows Playoff Appearance

The Regina Pats recently completed their first postseason appearance since the 2022-23 season, losing in overtime to the Medicine Hat Tigers in the fifth game of a seven-game series. Despite this playoff showing, Derkatch decided to make sweeping changes to the coaching staff.

"I still think there's stability in the players that we're gonna move forward with," Derkatch explained during a media availability at the Brandt Centre. "We're gonna start fresh with a new voice, new direction. And we have generally a whole group of players coming back."

Herauf's Three-Year Tenure Ends

Brad Herauf compiled a 63-118-16-7 record through three seasons as head coach of the Regina Pats. The team finished seventh in the WHL's Eastern Division this season with a 25-34-7-2 regular season record that included multiple losing streaks.

"No tipping factor," Derkatch said when asked about the decision. "Just a review of the whole season and just looking at the whole thing and moving forward. There's maybe some philosophical things that might not align between Brad and I, but for the most part I just want a fresh voice."

The general manager acknowledged Herauf's contributions, stating: "He was with the organization a long time. Good man. Built tons of relationships, but I just think it's time for a new direction."

Contradiction in Organizational Philosophy

Just last week, Derkatch spoke about conducting a top-to-bottom assessment of the Pats' hockey operations while emphasizing the value of continuity. "You look at most real good franchises that are successful," he said at the time. "They tend to keep staffs and players and everyone together for a long period of time."

Despite this philosophy, Derkatch made the decision to replace both Herauf and Smith, whose contracts were due to expire this offseason. The general manager said he made his recommendations to CEO Gord Pritchard and Pats owner Shaun Semple based on the team's overall performance.

Search for New Coaching Leadership

Derkatch revealed he has no immediate replacements in mind but is seeking a coach "who communicates well" and can lead a young roster that includes exciting prospects Maddox Schultz and Liam Pue. The team selected these players first and third overall in the 2025 WHL draft.

"I think he coached them the way they needed to be coached to get where we got to," Derkatch said of Herauf's work with the current roster. "Like I said, we wanted to make the playoffs. We did. But now we're looking for bigger and better things, of course."

The general manager has not established a deadline for hiring new coaches but expressed enthusiasm about attracting candidates to lead what he described as a "legendary franchise" with promising young talent.
