Calgary Roughnecks Lock In Captain Eli Salama with Multi-Year Pact
The Calgary Roughnecks have made a significant move to secure their leadership core, signing captain Eli Salama to a three-year contract extension. This announcement comes just days after the National Lacrosse League trade deadline, solidifying Salama's future with the franchise that drafted him.
Loyalty and Leadership Rewarded
Eli Salama, a native of Coquitlam, British Columbia, has spent his entire seven-season professional career with the Roughnecks organization. Originally selected 12th overall in the first round of the 2018 NLL Entry Draft, Salama has developed into one of the league's premier defenders while demonstrating unwavering loyalty to the Calgary franchise.
"Spending my entire career with the Roughnecks has meant a lot to me, so signing this extension is really special," said the 6-foot-2, 205-pound defender. "I'm proud to continue building with this group of guys and pushing toward our goals as a team. With the new arena coming and the incredible support we get from our fans, it's an exciting time for the organization, and I am grateful for the opportunity to keep being part of it."
Impressive Career Statistics and Accolades
Throughout his 103 career regular-season games, Salama has compiled impressive defensive statistics including 13 goals, 50 points, and an outstanding 573 loose balls. His career highlight came early when he won an NLL championship with the Roughnecks during his rookie season in 2018-19.
This season, the 29-year-old defender reached another milestone when he was named the tenth captain in franchise history, a testament to his leadership qualities both on and off the floor.
Management's Perspective on the Extension
Roughnecks General Manager Mike Board expressed enthusiasm about securing Salama's services for the long term. "Eli is a consummate professional on and off the floor," Board stated. "As our captain, he leads by example, competing every shift and every game. He is passionate about the Roughnecks and wanted to stay in Calgary, which were keys to being able to work out a multi-year deal. As one of the top defenders in the league and one of the core players on the team, it is exciting for the Roughnecks to move forward with Eli as the team's captain over the long-term."
Trade Deadline Context
The timing of this extension is particularly noteworthy given Salama's defensive prowess, championship experience, and leadership qualities would have made him an attractive target for playoff-bound NLL teams ahead of Monday's trade deadline. Instead of exploring trade possibilities, the Roughnecks chose to secure their captain's future with the organization.
While the Roughnecks did make one transaction before the deadline—sending defender Tyler Hendrycks to the defending champion Buffalo Bandits in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NLL Draft—their primary focus remained on retaining their core leadership.
Looking Ahead
With Salama now locked in for three additional seasons, the Roughnecks have secured a foundational piece for their defensive unit and leadership group. The extension represents a commitment to stability and continuity as the franchise prepares for future challenges, including the anticipated move to a new arena.
Salama's combination of defensive excellence, championship pedigree, and captaincy makes this extension a crucial move for the Roughnecks as they build toward future success in the National Lacrosse League.
