Calgary Roughnecks Keep Playoff Dreams Alive with Second Consecutive Victory
The Calgary Roughnecks have reignited their playoff aspirations with a hard-fought 13-9 triumph over the visiting Ottawa Black Bears at Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday. This marks their second straight win in the National Lacrosse League, providing a much-needed boost in what has been a challenging season for the local squad.
Season-High Crowd Witnesses Crucial Victory
In front of a season-high attendance, the Roughnecks delivered a performance that has injected hope into their campaign. With a record of 4-9, the team faces an uphill battle, but this victory slows the progress of the bubble-team Black Bears, who now stand at 8-6, and brings Calgary closer to the San Diego Seals, who currently hold the final playoff position.
"The guys are real happy to be able to win and put that type of effort in front of the fans and have them leave happy," said Roughnecks head coach Josh Sanderson. "We've had some bad home games this year, especially in the fourth quarter. So it's just really nice that we could have everybody besides Ottawa leaving the rink happy."
Four Key Takeaways from the Roughnecks' Triumph
1) Haiden Dickson's Offensive Explosion
Veteran forward Haiden Dickson was the standout performer, netting four goals to lead the Roughnecks to victory. His offensive prowess is crucial if the team hopes to continue its push for a playoff berth. Dickson, who is second on the team with 24 goals this season, matched the game-high with six points, including the 200th point of his career.
"The guys are just getting me open and getting me the ball, and I'm going to the net, and I'm shooting it," said the 25-year-old Dickson. "It's a whole team effort. On offence, everyone's getting looks, and it's good."
Coach Sanderson praised Dickson's recent performances, noting, "Hayden's last two games are the best of the year. I think he's simplifying some things after maybe pressing a little earlier in the year. He was forcing some stuff, and now he's just letting the game come to him a little more."
Teammates Tanner Cook, Tyler Pace, and Brayden Mayea also contributed six-point efforts, with Cook and Mayea each recording hat-tricks in the decisive win.
2) Defensive Dominance Early On
While the Roughnecks' offence has been impressive, scoring 28 goals in their last two victories, the defence deserves equal acclaim. They stifled the Black Bears early, preventing them from registering a shot until midway through the first quarter and holding them scoreless until four minutes into the second period.
This defensive solidity provided a foundation for the offensive outburst, showcasing a balanced team effort that will be essential as the Roughnecks aim to climb the standings in the coming weeks.
