Nathan Rourke's Presence Gives B.C. Lions Major Edge in Free Agency Pursuits
General Manager Ryan Rigmaiden of the B.C. Lions has revealed that having star quarterback Nathan Rourke leading the team provides a significant advantage when recruiting players during the crucial free agency period. The Canadian Football League's free agency window officially opens on February 10, but Rigmaiden has already been actively building the Lions' roster for his second season at the helm.
Quarterback Excellence as a Recruitment Tool
Rigmaiden emphasized that Rourke's dual recognition as both the CFL's George Reed Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian last season creates powerful appeal for potential signings. "You don't win in this league without a quarterback. That's just the reality of it," Rigmaiden stated. "Everybody wants to play with the best and Nathan's not only the best in the league at quarterback — I think he's the best player in the league."
The general manager further explained that players initially respect Rourke's on-field abilities but develop even greater appreciation after getting to know him personally. "When they start talking to him and getting to know him, they respect the man. That's even better," Rigmaiden added, highlighting how Rourke's character complements his athletic prowess.
Early Defensive Acquisitions Strengthen Roster
The Lions have already secured two significant defensive additions before free agency officially begins:
- Darnell Sankey: Signed to a one-year deal after being released by the Montreal Alouettes. The 31-year-old middle linebacker has been a CFL East Division all-star for the past two seasons.
- Casey Sayles: Agreed to a two-year contract after being released by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The 30-year-old defensive tackle earned East Division all-star honours this past year along with 2023 All-CFL team recognition.
Rigmaiden described these acquisitions as "premium, elite talents who are at the top of their game" and noted that securing them ahead of free agency provides strategic advantages for roster planning.
Key Returning Players and Pending Decisions
The Lions have already extended contracts with twelve of their own pending free agents, including notable players such as:
- Wide receiver Keon Hatcher
- Defensive lineman Jonah Tavai
However, several important players remain in negotiation limbo as the free agency deadline approaches. Rigmaiden specifically mentioned offensive tackle Jarell Broxton, running back James Butler, and receiver Ayden Eberhardt as players the organization hopes to retain.
Butler, who ranked third in CFL rushing with 1,213 yards last season and tied for the league lead in rushing touchdowns with 11, appears on multiple free agency watch lists. Broxton received All-CFL recognition and was graded by Pro Football Focus as the top player in pass protection.
Roster Adjustments and Difficult Decisions
The addition of Sankey necessitated the difficult release of veteran linebacker Micah Awe, who led the CFL in tackles last season with 117. Rigmaiden described the decision as painful, noting his long-standing relationship with Awe dating back to 2017 when he initially signed with the Lions out of Texas Tech.
"It hurt a ton to let him go. I personally love him as a human being," Rigmaiden confessed. "This is worst part of this business. It was something we had to do because it was the best decision for the club."
Looking Ahead to the 2026 Season
The Lions' 2026 campaign begins with an away game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on June 13, followed by their home opener on June 27 against the Calgary Stampeders at Kelowna's Apple Bowl. Due to FIFA World Cup commitments at B.C. Place, the Lions won't play their first home game at their regular stadium until July 25, when they host the Toronto Argonauts.
Rigmaiden's strategic approach to roster building, leveraging Rourke's star power while making calculated additions and difficult cuts, positions the Lions as serious contenders as they aim to improve upon last season's West Division final loss to Saskatchewan.
