Scott Laughton's Emotional Farewell to Toronto Goes Viral After NHL Trade
In a touching display of gratitude, Scott Laughton didn't depart Toronto without leaving a heartfelt message for the city and its fans. After being traded by the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Los Angeles Kings at the NHL trade deadline on Friday, the 31-year-old center took to social media to express his appreciation.
A Dream Come True in Toronto
Laughton posted a simple yet powerful message on X: "Thank you Toronto. Dream come true." The post was accompanied by a photo and video showing Laughton greeting his son Reed at the corner glass during warmups of Maple Leafs home games at Scotiabank Arena. By late Saturday afternoon, this emotional farewell had gone viral, accumulating more than 300,000 views on the platform.
The Oakville native was thrilled when the Leafs acquired him from the Philadelphia Flyers just a year ago. There was speculation that if the 2025-26 season had progressed favorably for Toronto, an extension for Laughton might have been negotiated before he reached unrestricted free agency this summer.
Trade Details and Team Changes
However, as the Maple Leafs' season went off course, general manager Brad Treliving shifted to seller mode before the deadline. In recent days, the team traded Laughton to Los Angeles, Bobby McMann to the Seattle Kraken, and Nicolas Roy to the Colorado Avalanche.
The Leafs received a conditional third-round pick in 2026 from the Kings in exchange for Laughton. If Los Angeles makes the Stanley Cup playoffs this spring, that pick will upgrade to a second-round selection this year. Notably, this second-round pick originally belonged to the Buffalo Sabres before being acquired by the Kings.
Laughton will wear number 21 with his new team in Los Angeles, where he'll be reunited with interim head coach D.J. Smith. The two previously worked together for two seasons with the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League from 2012 to 2014.
Teammate Tributes and Lasting Impressions
During his brief tenure with the Maple Leafs, Laughton quickly became a popular figure in the locker room. Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews spoke warmly about both Laughton and McMann after their departures.
"Two great guys," Matthews said on Saturday. "Laughty fit in right away, and he was only here for a year. A lot of guys knew him from the Toronto area. Just an incredible guy. Bobby had a long journey and a long path to get to where he is now. We wish those guys nothing but the best. They are guys you will keep in touch with throughout the years."
Laughton's viral farewell serves as a poignant reminder of the personal connections that transcend team affiliations in professional sports. His simple message of gratitude resonated deeply with fans, highlighting the emotional dimension of player transactions that often gets overshadowed by business considerations.
