Ottawa Senators general manager and president of hockey operations Steve Staios holds the key to the team's future after their first-round playoff exit. The Senators were swept in four games by the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, ending their season abruptly.
Staios has already traveled to Slovakia to scout the IIHF U18 world championship, as the Senators hold the No. 32 overall pick in the 2026 NHL draft. Upon his return, he is expected to meet with captain Brady Tkachuk to discuss the season's outcome and outline a plan for progress.
Tkachuk Eager for Conversation
Brady Tkachuk, who missed the team's exit meetings due to the birth of his daughter Lyla, expressed his desire to sit down with Staios. "I just want to talk to Steve, and I know we're going to talk," Tkachuk said. "I want to hear what he thinks about our team and where I can improve."
The captain met with head coach Travis Green on Wednesday, but the sting of the playoff loss remains fresh. Tkachuk emphasized the need for honest discussions about the team's direction.
Contract Situation
Tkachuk has two years remaining on his current contract, and extension talks are not permitted until July 2027. However, the captain has made it clear that his priority is winning, especially after watching his brother Matthew hoist the Stanley Cup twice with the Florida Panthers.
"My belief is it's important for Staios to lay out his plan to Tkachuk on how this team will make another step," a league executive told Postmedia.
Room for Improvement
The Senators showed promise during the regular season, but their playoff performance exposed areas needing growth. Tkachuk remains optimistic about the team's core. "We have so many great players. I thought we showed how hard we are to play against," he said.
Staios, Green, and the hockey operations staff must now determine the necessary changes to push the team beyond the first round next season.
