Windsor Spitfires Reclaim West Division Lead with Decisive Victory
The Windsor Spitfires have surged back into control of the West Division in the Ontario Hockey League, following a commanding 5-1 triumph over the Erie Otters at the WFCU Centre on Tuesday. This pivotal win, combined with the Flint Firebirds' 6-2 loss to the Kitchener Rangers, propelled the Spitfires into first place with just two games remaining in the regular season.
Key Performances Drive Success
Goaltender Michael Newlove was instrumental in the victory, making 14 saves to notch his 12th win of the season. Offensively, the Spitfires showcased their depth despite missing several key players due to injuries. Rookie forward Beks Makysh, hailing from Kazakhstan, delivered an outstanding performance with one goal and two assists, marking his second three-point game this season. Makysh, who has played in all 66 games, is tied for eighth in rookie scoring with 14 goals and 39 points, while also maintaining a plus-28 rating.
Head coach Greg Walters praised Makysh's development, noting, "He's so skilled, fearless, fast, and very competitive. Early in the season, it was an adjustment for him learning how to play 200 feet, but he's now one of our best guys defensively." Additional contributions came from rookie Johnny McLaughlin, who scored a goal, while veterans Jack Nesbitt netted two goals and Ethan Garden added another.
Team Resilience and Playoff Preparations
The Spitfires have demonstrated remarkable resilience, winning three consecutive games and earning 15 out of a possible 18 points in their last nine outings. With 94 points through 66 games, they hold a narrow one-point lead over Flint, who have also played 66 games. Overage defenceman Wyatt Kennedy emphasized the team's focus, stating, "It's all in our control now. We hold our own destiny, and it's important to us to try and win our division."
Looking ahead, the Spitfaces face challenging road games against the London Knights on Friday and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Sunday before the playoffs begin at home the following Thursday. Kennedy added, "We can't take anything lightly. These next two games are really important, a really good test to prepare us for the playoffs."
Honoring Overage Players
Prior to Tuesday's game, the Spitfires honored their three overage players—goalie Joey Costanzo, defenceman Wyatt Kennedy, and forward Alex Pharand—in a special ceremony. Co-owners John and Stephen Savage welcomed family members and billet families to the ice, presenting each player with a jersey to commemorate their final regular-season home game.
