Stampede Canvas Auction Shatters Records with $6 Million in Bids
The Calgary Stampede's annual chuckwagon canvas auction has set a new benchmark, raising an astonishing $6.075 million in sponsorship bids on Thursday night. This remarkable total obliterates the previous record of $4.015 million established during the Stampede's centennial year in 2012.
Unprecedented Bidding Frenzy
Held at the Big Four Roadhouse, the auction saw corporate sponsors competing fiercely for advertising rights on chuckwagon tarps during the nightly Rangeland Derby races. Stampede board Chairman Stuart O'Connor described the evening as "a landmark" event that far exceeded expectations.
"We had a little inkling it would be a good night but it way exceeded my expectations," said O'Connor. "The energy in that room was palpable, everybody got behind it and I hope it's a precursor of what's to come this summer."
Record-Setting Individual Bid
Chuckwagon driver Rae Croteau Jr. of Strathmore received the highest individual bid in the auction's history at $550,000. The winning sponsorship came from Heidi and Darren Lindgren of Bar L-5 Ranch and MVA Group of Companies.
Croteau, a 20-year competitor at the Calgary Stampede, had playfully warned previous record-holder Kelly Sutherland about breaking his $300,000 record set in 2012. "I talked to him tonight and said 'I'm going to beat your record' and he's like 'that'll be good for sport,'" said Croteau.
Economic Confidence Indicator
Stampede CEO Joel Cowley suggested the record-breaking auction might reflect renewed economic confidence in Alberta. "Honestly, (I'm) absolutely blown away — there's economic uncertainty but we also know the oil prices have spiked and that might be a supporting factor," he said, noting the impact of global events on energy prices.
Heidi Lindgren echoed this sentiment, stating that the investment represents "a vote of pride and confidence in the province and country." She added, "What Alberta should be proud of is that people chose to invest it here, and that's a bellwether event, that people believe in where the province is going."
Notable Auction Statistics
- The $6.075 million total represents a significant increase from last year's $3.84 million
- The auction set a new record for highest average bid at $142,222.22
- Only 27 riders participated this year, compared to 36 when previous records were set
- Other notable bids included $475,000 for Layne MacGillivray and $180,000 for Chance Flad
Pressure to Perform
Croteau acknowledged that the substantial sponsorship comes with increased expectations. "It means it's time to win, we've got to put pen to paper and rock n' roll," said the driver, whose best Rangeland Derby finish was second place in 2014.
The annual canvas auction, now in its 45th year, serves as a crucial fundraising event for chuckwagon drivers while providing corporate sponsors with prominent advertising during the Calgary Stampede, which runs from July 3-12 this year.
