Brad Treliving Secures New Role with Hockey Canada Following Maple Leafs Departure
In a swift career move, former Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has been announced as part of Hockey Canada's management group for the world championship. This development comes merely two weeks after his firing from the NHL club, marking a significant transition in his professional journey.
International Assignment in Switzerland
The world championship is scheduled to take place from May 15 to 31 in Zurich and Fribourg, Switzerland. Treliving will be joined by Jason Spezza, a former Leafs forward who currently serves as assistant general manager with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Their efforts will be supported by Penguins GM Kyle Dubas and Hockey Canada senior vice-president Scott Salmond.
With the Penguins actively competing in the Stanley Cup playoffs, Dubas will prioritize his NHL duties, but his involvement adds strategic depth to the Canadian team's management.
Leadership and Experience Highlighted
Scott Salmond emphasized the value of Treliving's background in a public statement. "Brad brings invaluable experience from previous international events and the NHL, and Jason is a rising NHL executive who brings a wealth of experience as a player professionally and internationally," Salmond noted.
Treliving's international resume includes co-managing Canada to a gold medal at the 2016 world championship and serving as an assistant general manager during the 2014 tournament, where Canada placed fifth.
Potential Player Selections for Canada
If Treliving opts to leverage his connections, he could consider inviting several Maple Leafs players to represent Canada at the worlds. Potential candidates include:
- Forwards John Tavares, Max Domi, and Easton Cowan
- Defencemen Morgan Rielly and Troy Stecher
Cowan's availability remains uncertain, as it is unclear whether he will join the Toronto Marlies for their Calder Cup playoffs in the American Hockey League. Should he play for the Marlies, their playoff run could conclude well before the world championship begins.
Ongoing Search for Treliving's Successor in Toronto
Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs are actively seeking a replacement for Treliving. Interviews with MLSE CEO and president Keith Pelley are currently underway this week, as the organization aims to fill the vacant general manager position promptly.
This appointment underscores Treliving's resilience and expertise in hockey management, positioning him for continued influence on the international stage.
