Vancouver Warriors Capture NLL Regular Season Championship, Set for Home Playoff Run
The Vancouver Warriors have clinched the National Lacrosse League regular season crown, securing home-floor advantage throughout the playoffs after a decisive 17-10 victory over the Philadelphia Wings on Saturday at Rogers Arena. This triumph, combined with the Colorado Mammoth's 9-8 loss to the Calgary Roughnecks, solidified the Warriors' top spot in the 14-team league.
Playoff Schedule and Home Advantage
First-place Vancouver, with a record of 13-5, will host the eighth-place Halifax Thunderbirds (8-10) in a single-game quarterfinal this Friday at Rogers Arena. The semifinals and finals will be best-of-three series, offering the Warriors a significant edge as they pursue the championship. Prior to the regular season finale, the team had already guaranteed a playoff berth and home floor in the opening round, but Colorado's loss ensured they retained the top position.
Keegan Bal, the Warriors' right-hander, expressed the team's excitement, stating, "We're just excited to get the real season going. This is where it starts. For us, this is what you play for." Bal, 34, showcased his scoring prowess with six goals and 11 points against the Wings, helping him secure the NLL scoring title with 124 points, including 45 goals, edging out Connor Fields of the Rochester Knighthawks.
Team Transformation and Championship Aspirations
The Warriors' success stems from strategic changes since the Vancouver Canucks purchased the franchise in June 2018, relocating them from the Langley Events Centre to downtown Vancouver and rebranding them. In July 2023, the team recruited longtime Calgary Roughnecks coach Curt Malawsky to oversee lacrosse operations, sparking a surge in performance. Over the past three seasons, Vancouver has been active in NLL free agency, building a roster poised for a championship run.
Malawsky commented on the playoff format, saying, "I'd like it more if it was a 4-out-of-7 series. I think everybody would. Then you have some time to readjust if you don't have a great night. But it's the way the National Lacrosse League is." He emphasized the importance of players with championship experience, noting, "We brought guys here who have a championship pedigree. Having those guys who have climbed the mountain and won multiple championships is really big for us."
Season Highlights and Home Performance
Vancouver has posted a 6-3 record at Rogers Arena this season, including victories in five of their last six home games. A notable win came on April 10, when they staged an 8-7 comeback against Halifax, fueled by a fourth-quarter hat trick from Jesse King, a key free-agent addition. Last year, the Warriors finished 11-7, placing fourth in the regular season but were swept in the semifinals by the Buffalo Bandits.
The announced crowd of 9,630 at Saturday's game witnessed Bal's standout performance, underscoring the team's momentum as they head into the playoffs.
