Los Angeles Mayor Demands Resignation of 2028 Olympics Chairman

Casey Wasserman, the chairman of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, is facing mounting pressure to resign from his leadership role. This follows the release of documents linking him to Jeffrey Epstein's associate, Ghislaine Maxwell. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has publicly stated that Wasserman should step down from his position on the LA28 Olympic committee.

Mayor Bass Voices Strong Opposition

In a recent interview with CNN, Mayor Bass expressed her disapproval of the continued support Wasserman is receiving from Olympic organizers. She highlighted that Wasserman allegedly exchanged flirtatious emails with Maxwell approximately two decades ago, before Maxwell's criminal activities were widely known. "My opinion is that he should step down," Bass asserted. "That's not the opinion of the board." She further emphasized the need to reevaluate the leadership of LA28 to ensure the integrity of the upcoming Games.

Olympic Committee's Stance and Internal Review

Despite calls for his resignation, the executive committee of the LA28 Olympics reaffirmed its support for Wasserman on February 11. The committee conducted an internal review, concluding that Wasserman's interactions with Epstein and Maxwell were limited to what has already been disclosed publicly. In an official statement, they declared, "We found Mr. Wasserman's relationship with Epstein and Maxwell did not go beyond what has already been publicly documented." The committee insists he should remain in charge to ensure the delivery of a safe and successful event.

International Olympic Committee's Position

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has deferred the decision regarding Wasserman's future to the local organizers. IOC spokesperson Mark Adams addressed the media, stating, "This is a matter for the board of LA28 still at this stage. As you know a law firm looked into it and it is up to the board to draw their own conclusions. I understand there are many conversations happening at this moment." This indicates that while the IOC is monitoring the situation, the ultimate authority rests with the LA28 board.

Business Fallout and Wasserman's Response

The controversy has had significant repercussions for Wasserman's professional ventures. He recently announced the sale of his talent agency, Wasserman, citing the need to avoid becoming a distraction. High-profile clients, including Chappelle Roan and Abby Wambach, have severed ties with the agency due to the Epstein scandal. In a memo to staff, Wasserman explained, "During this time, Mike Watts will assume day-to-day control of the business while I devote my full attention to delivering Los Angeles an Olympic Games in 2028 that is worthy of this outstanding city."

Wasserman has publicly apologized for his past email correspondence with Maxwell, clarifying that it occurred prior to her conviction for sex trafficking. He emphasized that he has not been accused of any criminal wrongdoing related to the Epstein case. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for her role in trafficking minor girls for Epstein.

The situation continues to evolve as stakeholders weigh the implications for the 2028 Olympics' reputation and leadership.
