The Ottawa Senators have secured defenseman Jordan Spence with a four-year contract extension, the team announced Friday. The deal will keep the 25-year-old in Ottawa through the 2029-2030 season.
Contract Details and Performance
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but Spence has been a key contributor on the Senators' blue line. In the 2025-2026 season, he recorded 8 goals and 32 assists for 40 points in 72 games, along with a plus-12 rating. Over his career, Spence has played 198 NHL games, all with the Senators, tallying 18 goals and 78 assists for 96 points.
"Jordan has developed into a reliable, two-way defenseman who plays important minutes for us," said Senators general manager Steve Staios. "His skating, hockey IQ, and ability to move the puck are assets we value highly. We're pleased to have him under contract for the next four years."
Impact on the Team
Spence, a native of Sydney, Australia, was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the fourth round of the 2019 NHL Draft but was acquired by Ottawa in a trade prior to the 2022-2023 season. He has since become a staple on the Senators' defense, averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per game this past season.
The extension solidifies Ottawa's defensive core, which includes Thomas Chabot, Jake Sanderson, and Artem Zub. Spence's contract will carry an average annual value of approximately $4.5 million, according to sources close to the negotiations.
"I'm excited to stay in Ottawa," Spence said in a statement. "The organization has been great to me, and I believe in the direction we're heading. I want to help bring a Stanley Cup to this city."
Looking Ahead
The Senators finished the 2025-2026 season with a 38-32-12 record, missing the playoffs by six points. With Spence locked in, the team aims to build on its young core and push for a postseason berth in the coming years.
