Calgary Gears Up for 2026 FIFA World Cup Watch Parties

Calgary is experiencing a surge of FIFA World Cup fever as the city prepares to host several community watch parties for the 2026 tournament. Fans can gather at various locations across the city to cheer on their teams, with a special focus on Team Canada's matches.

Downtown Watch Party Hub

Downtown Calgary will become the epicenter for Team Canada supporters, with a free public watch party scheduled in Eau Claire for the team's opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday at 1 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on a 20-foot screen, and the event will feature family-friendly activities and free soccer clinics hosted by Cavalry FC and Calgary Wild FC until September 20, according to Carlo Bruneau, executive director of the Calgary Minor Soccer Association.

The watch party will continue for subsequent matches on June 18 against Qatar and June 24 against Switzerland. With nearly 35,000 children in the association, excitement for the World Cup is at an all-time high within the community. Bruneau stated, "There will be no shortage of excitement and opportunity for people, whether you are in the soccer community or just a fan of sports or soccer, to come and enjoy the moment of hosting a World Cup."

Boosting Local Soccer and Business

Expectations for Team Canada are higher than in their previous World Cup appearance in 2022, with hopes that the team will advance to the knockout round. Bruneau noted that the World Cup fever is fueling the next generation of players, coaches, and referees aspiring to break into the professional scene. "It is more achievable than ever that you could be wearing the Canadian leaf on your jersey," he said.

Local restaurants and bars are also preparing to host fans. On Tuesday, the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) announced greater flexibility for licensed establishments to begin liquor service as early as 6 a.m. without special approval, accommodating the World Cup schedule. Ernie Tsu, founder of the Alberta Hospitality Association and owner of Trolley 5 Brewpub, reported that the World Cup is driving reservations across the province. With Canada's first match just after the lunch rush on Friday, local businesses expect a healthy boost in foot traffic. Trolley 5 anticipates a full house of 500 fans. "On 17th and Mission, all the restaurants and pubs are looking forward to it. Everyone is pumped for it, and everyone is excited to see if Team Canada can get out of the group stage," Tsu said.

Latin American Community Celebrations

The event is also a celebration for Calgary's Latin American community. Rebeca Andrada from Centro Latino mentioned that fans are always eager to watch games together. Centro Latino will collaborate with SpanicArts to host watch parties at its building at 131 6th Avenue S.W., starting on June 27 when Colombia faces Portugal. In addition to broadcasting the match on a giant screen, Latin American food and beverages will be available for purchase.
