Calgary's Tommy Wheeldon Jr., the general manager and head coach of Cavalry FC, is set for a prestigious national team assignment. He has been invited to contribute his expertise to the Canadian men's soccer team's technical staff during a crucial training camp.
A Short-Term National Team Call-Up
The invitation from Canada head coach Jesse Marsch is for a focused, 11-day period. Wheeldon will join the senior men's squad from Thursday, January 6, through January 18. The camp is taking place in Irvine, California, and is a key part of Canada's long-term preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Canada will co-host with the United States and Mexico.
"I'm grateful to Jesse for the opportunity to join the camp," said Wheeldon. He emphasized the honour of being involved and the chance to learn from Marsch and the staff during this important preparation window as the team builds toward the global tournament this summer.
The camp will culminate in an international friendly match against Guatemala on January 17 at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. Fortunately for Cavalry FC supporters, this is a short-term role, and Wheeldon is scheduled to return to the Calgary club by the end of January, in time for the start of Canadian Premier League pre-season preparations.
Cavalry's Growing Influence in Canadian Soccer
Wheeldon's appointment continues a notable trend for Cavalry FC's technical staff contributing to national team programs. He becomes the third member of the club's staff to work with Canada Soccer in recent months.
Assistant coach Jay Wheeldon participated in a men's U-20 camp in Costa Rica in December. Furthermore, fellow assistant Nik Ledgerwood was previously part of the technical staff with the Women's National Team in the lead-up to the 2023 SheBelieves Cup. This pattern highlights the Calgary-based club's developing reputation within the national soccer landscape.
Cavalry Announces Roster Moves for 2026 Season
In related club news, Cavalry FC has confirmed several roster decisions as they build for the future. The club has exercised contract options for defender Eryk Kobza and midfielder Niko Myroniuk, ensuring both players will remain with the team for the 2026 Canadian Premier League season.
Conversely, the club has declined options for defender Tom Field, forward Ayman Sellouf, and midfielder Diego Gutierrez. While Cavalry remains in discussions with Gutierrez regarding a potential contract extension, the club publicly thanked Field and Sellouf for their contributions and wished them well in their future careers.
Additionally, the club has secured the return of two promising young local talents. Defender Michael Harms and goalkeeper Joseph Holliday will be back with Cavalry in 2026, with club options in place for the 2027 and 2028 seasons.
Wheeldon commented on the young duo, stating, "Both Joseph and Michael have been progressing nicely over the past couple of seasons. It is important that we continue to be patient and support the development of our young, local talent." He expressed excitement about their potential for increased game time in the upcoming season.
