Cameron Young praised Donald Trump after winning the Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral in Miami, drawing criticism from some of the president's detractors. The moment sparked widespread discussion on social media, with fans interpreting his words in various ways.
Young secured a six-stroke victory and received applause, a thumbs-up, and a handshake from Trump. In a post-win interview that went viral, Young said: "He's nothing if not a very, very interesting man. He's very powerful, and it's an honor to get to play in front of him. Hugely grateful to him and his family and his organization that has these beautiful properties and allows us to come and play great golf tournaments on them. This is a special place and great championship golf course, and I'm thankful to have it back in the schedule."
The remarks provoked outrage among some fans, with a few threatening to withdraw their support. Others argued that Young's comments were a careful exercise in diplomacy to avoid political controversy.
During the tournament, Young demonstrated integrity by calling a one-stroke penalty on himself after inadvertently moving a still ball on the fairway. This action stood in stark contrast to Trump's reputation on the golf course, as detailed in the book "Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump" by sportswriter Rick Reilly. Reilly accused Trump of cheating "like a mafia accountant" and claimed his club championships were "as fake as Velveeta cheese."
The Washington Post noted that the tournament, the PGA Tour's first at Trump National Doral in a decade, had lower attendance than other events, potentially due to Trump's involvement, intermittent rain, and the absence of top players like reigning Masters champion Rory McIlroy. The official reason for the decade-long hiatus was sponsorship problems, but the Post suggested that outrage over Trump's past comments about immigrants, particularly Mexicans, also played a role.
