Cliff Fletcher was one of the greatest storytellers in hockey before his recent passing. It was only natural that new Toronto Maple Leafs coach Jim Hiller had a memorable story about the revered Fletcher, who died at age 90 in Scottsdale, Ariz., on June 5.
The story dates back to 2015 in Halifax, during Hiller's first Leafs training camp as an assistant coach on Mike Babcock's staff. Fletcher was a senior advisor in the Leafs' front office. One night after dinner, assistant coach DJ Smith had the chance to sit with Fletcher.
"DJ and I have often referenced that as one of the greatest nights in hockey, listening to Cliff share stories and reveal his humility, caring, and pride in the Leafs," Hiller said. "It's a night we'll never forget. It brings a huge smile to my face and warms my heart to think about Cliff Fletcher and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He truly embodies what we're all trying to do here."
Hiller, a native of Port Alberni, B.C., called becoming head coach of the Leafs "an opportunity of a lifetime." He recalled growing up watching Hockey Night in Canada with his father. "Being able to sit in this chair and represent this organization fills me with immense pride," he added.
