Ghana Fans Take Over Toronto Streets to Celebrate World Cup Win
Ghana Fans Celebrate World Cup Win in Toronto Streets

Thousands of Ghana supporters poured into the streets of Toronto on Wednesday night to celebrate their team's stunning 1-0 victory over Panama in the FIFA World Cup. The match, held at Toronto Stadium, saw Caleb Yirenkyi score the lone goal in the 94th minute, securing a dramatic win for Ghana in Group L.

Celebrations Erupt Across the City

Fans who had been watching the game at Toronto Stadium streamed out and made their way to Sankofa Square, where thousands more had gathered. The square, already packed with Ghanaians who did not attend the match, became the epicenter of festivities. Dancing and singing continued into the early hours of the morning.

Journalist Marley Dickinson captured the scene on social media, posting: "It's midnight in Toronto and the Ghana World Cup party is still raging at Sankofa Square. It's amazing to see."

Police Presence and Order

As the celebrations intensified, Toronto Police formed a barricade to prevent the party from spilling onto Yonge and Dundas Streets. The authorities ensured that the festivities remained contained and orderly.

Significance of Sankofa Square

Sankofa Square, formerly known as Yonge-Dundas Square, has become a popular gathering spot for Ghanaian fans during the World Cup. The name change, approved by Toronto councillors in 2023, was part of efforts to remove names connected to slavery and alleged racism. "Sankofa" originates from Ghana and means "the act of reflecting on and reclaiming teachings from the past which enables us to move forward together."

Ghana's World Cup Journey

Ghana is one of three West African nations playing in Toronto during the 2026 World Cup. After the opening round of Group L matches, Ghana sits in second place behind England, both with three points. England leads on goal difference after a 4-2 win over Croatia.

Group L's next games are scheduled for June 23, with England facing Ghana in Boston, while Toronto hosts matches between Panama and Croatia.

Other West African teams playing in Toronto include Ivory Coast, which faces Germany on Saturday, and Senegal, which plays its final group-stage match against Iraq on June 26.
