Elliotte Friedman, the NHL's top insider, provided an update on the Darnell Nurse trade talks during the latest episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, explaining why the process is dragging out.
Nurse's Trade List and Potential Destinations
Friedman reported that Nurse has a three-team list: Boston, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia. All three teams have expressed interest in the Edmonton Oilers defenseman, but each is waiting for other moves to materialize before proceeding.
Philadelphia's Cap Constraints
Philadelphia needs to clear salary cap space before acquiring Nurse. The Flyers are exploring a trade involving Risto Ristolainen, but according to Friedman, “I heard there was nothing that really had them thrilled about it. You know, that can always change with one phone call. But kind of something had to happen before that (a Nurse trade) could happen.”
Pittsburgh's Negotiations
The Pittsburgh Penguins pushed Edmonton to take back salary in the deal, but the Oilers were unwilling to accommodate that request. This has stalled discussions between the two teams.
Boston's Hesitation
Boston also remains a potential destination, but Friedman noted that “things would have to happen” for a trade to move forward. He added that the Oilers are trying to get Nurse to expand his list of acceptable teams.
Anaheim Emerges as a Potential Option
Friedman mentioned that there is “noise that Anaheim has interest” in Nurse, citing the Ducks' need for blue-line help. However, Nurse has not agreed to a trade to Anaheim at this point. “We’ll see where that plays out over the week,” Friedman said.
The Oilers are reportedly eager to finalize a deal, but the trade market remains in a holding pattern as teams assess their options.
