The Saskatchewan Roughriders fell 40-34 to the Toronto Argonauts at Mosaic Stadium on Friday, marking their first loss of the 2026 CFL season. The game also drew sharp criticism for the team's all-white 'Prairie Blizzard' jerseys, which fans and media alike deemed impractical, illegible, and jinxed.
Jersey controversy overshadows performance
The white-on-white jerseys made player numbers nearly impossible to read from the stands. Darrell Davis of the Regina Leader-Post wrote, 'If anybody in the stadium said they could read Saskatchewan’s white-on-white jersey numbers, keep that person away from kryptonite.' The jerseys were worn for the first time Friday, and many hope it will be the last.
The Roughriders' performance was equally hard to watch. Cornerback Tevaughn Campbell missed a tackle, defensive end Desmond Evans reportedly whiffed on a sack, receiver Jaylen Johnson fumbled a fourth-quarter reception, wideout KeeSean Johnson dropped a pass, and slotback Samuel Emilus ran a faulty route that led to an interception by quarterback Trevor Harris.
Harris's mixed night
Harris completed 34 of 43 passes for 409 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw his first interception of the season. 'We’re all gonna look at the film and see how we can get better,' Harris said. Head coach Corey Mace and defensive co-ordinator Joshua Bell, also wearing white hoodies, made unusual calls, while the defence finally forced its first turnover of the season—a goal-line interception by linebacker Josh Woods.
The decision to replace injured returner James Letcher with Samuel Emilus backfired when Emilus got hurt on his second punt return, something he hadn't done since 2022, according to CFL.ca. Rookie Daniel Wiebe, who scored his first touchdown in his first game Friday, is a bona fide returner who proved his worth during the preseason.
Argonauts spoil the night
Led by quarterback Chad Kelly, who spoke after the game about Mosaic's 'hostile environment,' the Argonauts improved to 2-1. A 68-yard punt return for a touchdown by Janarion Grant opened the scoring. Rookie receiver Tyler Kahmann caught two TD passes, and Kelly added a scoring run. Kahmann's first touchdown came in the dying seconds of the first half, putting Toronto ahead 20-17 and exposing the Roughriders' inability to retain the ball, make crucial stops, or cover kicks—a special-teams unit that has surrendered a scoring return in two straight games.
'That’s a tough one to give up,' Mace said postgame. 'There were a few momentum-stealers; it just wasn’t complementary tonight.'
Attendance and context
The Roughriders sold or distributed 25,035 tickets for the game, which was moved from Toronto to Regina because the Argonauts' home stadium is being used for soccer's World Cup. The 2-1 Roughriders now look ahead to their next game, hoping to rebound from their worst performance of the season.
