The Ottawa Senators have decided not to tender a qualifying offer to winger Arthur Kaliyev, the leading scorer for their American Hockey League affiliate in Belleville, making him an unrestricted free agent as the NHL free agency period approaches.
Kaliyev's Stellar Season in Belleville
The 25-year-old Kaliyev, who earned $775,000 US at the NHL level and $425,000 US in the minors on a one-year deal last season, posted 40 goals and 68 points in 78 games with the Belleville Senators. He became the first player in franchise history to be named an AHL first-team all-star.
“Arthur had an exceptional year and is very deserving of this recognition,” Belleville general manager Matt Turek said. “His ability to generate offence and make an impact every night was a major asset to our group, and we’re proud to see him recognized among the league’s best.”
Decision Ahead of Free Agency Deadline
The Senators' decision came before the 5 p.m. Monday deadline for qualifying offers. By not extending a contract, the club has opted to move on from Kaliyev, who was signed as an unrestricted free agent last summer by Senators president of hockey operations and general manager Steve Staios and owner Michael Andlauer, who previously worked with Kaliyev during their time with the Ontario Hockey League's Hamilton Bulldogs.
The Senators had hoped Kaliyev could revitalize his career within the organization, but his AHL performance did not translate into an NHL opportunity this season.
Impact on Ottawa's Roster Plans
With Kaliyev now set to become an unrestricted free agent, the Senators will have additional flexibility as they prepare for NHL free agency. The team is expected to explore other options to bolster their forward group, while Kaliyev will look to attract interest from other clubs based on his strong AHL campaign.
More details on the Senators' free agency plans are expected in the coming days.
