Toronto FC's Josh Sargent Awaited to Score as Coach Defends Progress

Toronto FC head coach Robin Fraser, known for his defensive prowess as a player, is now showcasing a different kind of defensive skill in his managerial role—staunchly supporting his players. This was evident on Friday when Fraser addressed questions about first-year forward Josh Sargent, who joined Toronto from Norwich City in February.

Josh Sargent's Early Season Performance

The 26-year-old American striker, who netted an impressive 56 goals in 157 appearances over five seasons with Norwich City, has yet to score in his debut season with Toronto FC. Sargent has made one start and two appearances for a TFC side that has managed only six regular-season goals in five games. However, Fraser remains optimistic about his progress.

"In my mind, he's playing extremely well," Fraser said. "For us, it's been about trying to get him physically in a position where he can perform all season. That's the reason for not throwing him into games from the beginning. We're building his strength, agility, and all the things he needs to remain healthy throughout the year."

Fraser's Confidence in Sargent's Abilities

Fraser praised Sargent's contributions beyond scoring, noting his intelligence in defending, technical ability in attack, composure, and experience. "We see all those things every day," he added. "If your question is, 'When's he going to score?,' I have very little doubt that he is going to score soon. Certainly, the hope is once he starts, he doesn't stop."

Toronto fans are eagerly anticipating Sargent's breakout, possibly in Saturday's match against the Colorado Rapids at BMO Field. After starting the MLS campaign with two losses, Toronto FC has recorded points in their last three matches, including a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Crew on March 21.

Toronto FC's Home Stand and Upcoming Challenge

With seven straight regular-season games scheduled at BMO Field, Fraser emphasized the importance of capitalizing on this opportunity. "I choose to see it as a chance to get ahead," he said. "You take care of your home games, and by the time this homestand is over, we should be in a pretty good position."

However, Toronto will face a tough opponent in the resurgent Colorado Rapids, who have three wins and two defeats in five games. Under new head coach Matt Wells, Colorado has scored 11 goals—the second-highest tally in the MLS. Fraser, who coached Colorado from 2019 to 2023, acknowledged their strengths.

"They're good, young, energetic, and occupy interesting positions in their buildup," Fraser noted. "They play with a ton of energy and apply a lot of pressure. They're a good group." Forward Rafael Navarro leads the Rapids with three goals, and the team is coming off a 4-1 victory over Kansas City on March 21.

Team Outlook and Player Updates

Toronto FC, which has failed to make the MLS playoffs since 2020, appears to be heading in a positive direction this year. Goalkeeper Luka Gavran, a native of Hamilton, expressed confidence in the team's potential. "I think we're just scratching the surface of what this team can achieve," he said. "I was disappointed in how we played in the first two games because it didn't reflect our pre-season performance. But bouncing back with two wins and a tie shows we have so much more to offer."

Saturday's match will also mark the return of defender Kosi Thompson, who was acquired by the Rapids from TFC last week for up to $400,000 in general allocation money. Additionally, first-year left back Matheus Pereira, who has been sidelined with a groin injury and has yet to play this season, is now available, according to Fraser.

As Toronto FC continues its homestand, all eyes will be on Josh Sargent to see if he can translate his coach's faith into goals and help propel the team toward a playoff berth.
