Blue Jays phenom Trey Yesavage nears return from injury

Toronto Blue Jays pitching prospect Trey Yesavage was back in uniform at Rogers Centre on Friday, playing catch in the outfield as he edges closer to his highly anticipated return to the major leagues. The 22-year-old right-hander, who dazzled during the 2025 season and postseason, is currently on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement but is nearing a return.

Rehab assignment continues

Yesavage has been on a rehab assignment with the triple-A Buffalo Bisons. In his most recent start on Tuesday, he allowed four runs (two earned) on four walks and two hits over 2.1 innings. While the numbers were not stellar, the Blue Jays are more focused on his health and readiness than the stat line.

Manager John Schneider emphasized the importance of ensuring Yesavage is fully prepared before rejoining the big league club. "It's very exciting, without putting too much pressure on him," Schneider said. "There's going to be adjustments he's going to have to make and that the league will make to him. You kind of forget that part, where it's going to be his first full year in the big leagues."

Decision looming

The Blue Jays coaching staff and front office are weighing whether Yesavage needs one more start in Buffalo or if he is ready to pitch in Toronto. Schneider noted that the team wants to see him build up his pitch count and command before facing elite hitters again. Yesavage's last major league appearance came in Game 7 of the World Series last November.

"He's a bright kid and he's pretty polished in terms of what his stuff does and how each of his pitches work," Schneider added. "I don't want to compare him to Kevin Gausman, but I think that there's going to be a time where there's going to be outing where he can rely on the split or the slider."

Optimism for the future

General manager Ross Atkins expressed optimism about Yesavage's progress. "Really encouraged about where he is, encouraged by his stuff, encouraged by the progression, obviously healthy at this point," Atkins said. "So feel like he could be an option for us soon."

The Blue Jays have dealt with rotation instability early in the season, making Yesavage's return even more critical. The team is hopeful that the rookie can provide a consistent presence every fifth day.
