The 2026 Computex, an annual tech convention held in Taipei, Taiwan from June 2 to 5, showcased groundbreaking advancements in portable PC gaming. Among the highlights was the ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) XBOX Ally X20 bundle, which combines an upgraded handheld PC with special AR glasses that simulate a massive 171-inch display. This bundle commemorates ROG's 20th anniversary and is set to launch around the holiday season.
Handheld Gaming Takes Center Stage
Handheld gaming was a dominant trend at Computex 2026, alongside AI-powered PCs, innovative tower designs, and accessories like ultrawide monitors. Despite a global memory shortage affecting costs, the mood among the estimated 111,000 attendees was optimistic.
The ROG XBOX Ally X20 features a 7.4-inch OLED display with HDR and Dolby Vision, supporting up to 1400 nits of brightness—a significant upgrade from the previous 500 nits. It boasts a 120Hz refresh rate with FreeSync Premium Pro and a 0.2-millisecond response time. The handheld runs Windows 11 and can connect to a TV or monitor, or pair with the included ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses for a projected 171-inch virtual screen. Other specs include an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of RAM, 1TB storage (expandable), improved Xbox-inspired controls, and rubberized handles for better grip.
Intel's New G-Series Processors
Intel debuted its Arc G3 and G3 Extreme processors, designed specifically for handheld gaming PCs. These chips deliver high speeds, strong GPU performance, and AI upscaling while maximizing battery life. Devices like the Acer Predator Atlas 8 and MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ demonstrated impressive performance, positioning Intel as a direct competitor to AMD in the handheld processor market.
Nvidia's RTX Spark Super Chip
Nvidia unveiled the RTX Spark, its first consumer PC chip family aimed at running personal AI agents locally on Windows computers. Developed with MediaTek, this system-on-a-chip combines supercomputer-grade architecture, 128GB unified memory, and 1 petaflop of AI compute. Premium laptops and mini PCs using RTX Spark are expected in the fall from partners like Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, MSI, and Microsoft.
Affordable Laptops
Despite the memory shortage, Computex featured budget-friendly laptops. Notable among them is the ASUS Zenbook 14, priced around $799 USD. It sports a 14-inch OLED display, up to 21 hours of battery life, and is made with ASUS's eco-friendly Ceraluminum material. Available in Arctic Blue, Zabriskie Beige, and Komodo Coral, it offers processor choices from Intel, AMD, and Snapdragon, and supports Microsoft Copilot+ for AI tasks.
Wi-Fi 8 on the Horizon
Wi-Fi 8 (802.11bn) was a buzzword at the show, promising faster speeds, higher reliability, broader reach, and reduced latency. TP-Link announced its Archer 8 router platform, the first Wi-Fi 8 router, expected later this year to address issues like inconsistent speeds and unstable mesh roaming.
