A recent incident involving former NFL reporter Dianna Russini and coach Mike Vrabel has highlighted the importance of keeping Spotify playlists private. Russini's public playlist, titled "Turnin the Page," was discovered by editor David Covucci, fueling rumors of a secret romance. The playlist, created after a series of Titans losses, includes songs by Beyonce, KISS, and Papa Roach, and has been criticized for its questionable curation. Whether you want to hide a relationship or just your music taste, here is how to protect your privacy on Spotify.
Making Individual Playlists Private
By default, all Spotify playlists are public. To make a specific playlist private, click the three dots at the top of the playlist and select "Make playlist private." This option is available on mobile, tablet, and desktop, and it makes the playlist visible only to you.
Setting All New Playlists to Private
To automatically keep new playlists private, go to your profile picture, select "Settings and privacy," then "Privacy and social." Under "Playlist visibility," toggle off "Public playlists." On desktop, go to "Settings," scroll to "Social," and toggle off "New playlists you create will be visible on your profile by default." Note that this does not affect existing playlists.
Using Private Listening Sessions
Private sessions hide your listening activity for six hours. On mobile, go to your profile picture, then "Settings and privacy," then "Privacy and social," and toggle on "Private session." On desktop, click your profile picture and select "Private session." This prevents friends from seeing what you are listening to in the "Friend activity" feature.
Making All Playlists Completely Private
To hide all playlists (new and old), on mobile, go to your profile picture, "Settings and privacy," "Privacy and social," and under "Profile visibility," toggle off "Playlists." On desktop, go to "Settings," scroll to "Social," and toggle off "People can see the playlists you have added to your profile." This ensures no one can see any of your playlists.
By following these steps, you can avoid unwanted scrutiny and enjoy your music privately.
