Canada Invests $2.4M in Next-Gen Satellite Tech

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is advancing Canada's next-generation Earth observation satellite system with a $2.4 million investment in ground segment technology. On June 11, 2026, Minister of Industry Mélanie Joly announced contracts awarded to Calian, Kepler, and MDA Space following a competitive procurement process. These contracts aim to develop concepts for controlling new satellites and managing their data from Earth.

Building on RADARSAT's Legacy

For over 30 years, Canada's RADARSAT satellites have provided critical Earth observation data, supporting services from monitoring illegal fishing to disaster relief. The new investment builds on this legacy to meet growing national needs. The funding complements $1.012 billion allocated in October 2023 for a 15-year satellite Earth observation program.

Contracts and Scope

Each company received up to $804,000 to produce ground-segment concept studies. The ground segment includes Earth-based satellite control and data management systems, while the space segment covers satellite infrastructure. In December 2025, CSA awarded similar contracts for space segment studies to C-CORE, Kepler, and MDA Space.

Minister Joly stated: "Earth observation technologies are essential to protecting Canada's security, strengthening our economy, and advancing our sovereignty. These investments support a next-generation satellite system that reinforces Canada's space sector as a sovereign capability."

Strategic Importance

The investment underscores space as a strategic national asset and a sovereign capability under Canada's Defence Industrial Strategy. Satellites provide daily observations of Canada's lands, waters, and northern regions, supporting maritime surveillance, sea ice tracking, and supply deliveries to northern communities.

CSA President Lisa Campbell added: "Canada has long-standing expertise in radar satellite technology. By building on this strong foundation, we are exploring innovative approaches to ensure Canadians maintain access to essential satellite data and services."

Next Steps

The selected companies will deliver a modern, flexible ground system concept, a development plan, and an overview of key technologies, risks, and mitigation strategies. This initiative strengthens Canada's sovereign capabilities and drives innovation across the space sector.
