CGC Inc., Canada's largest manufacturer of gypsum-based building materials, officially opened its new $210-million wallboard manufacturing plant in Wheatland County on Wednesday. The facility, built in partnership with U.S. parent company USG, is expected to create nearly 100 full-time jobs in the region.
Investment and Economic Impact
The plant will produce Sheetrock brand wallboard, a key material used in residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects across Canada. According to USG president and CEO Chris Macey, this investment marks a significant milestone for the company and demonstrates a strong commitment to manufacturing and construction in North America.
Wheatland County Reeve Scott Klassen welcomed the opening, calling it a strong sign of confidence in the region. He noted that the investment will create lasting benefits for the community, strengthen the local economy, and support long-term growth.
Government Support
The Alberta government contributed $3.7 million to the project through its Investment and Growth Fund. Minister of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration Joseph Schow highlighted that such investments reflect the province's attractive business environment, including its landscape, low taxes, and regulatory framework.
CGC, founded in Nova Scotia in 1907, and USG are now part of the Knauf Group, which became the world's largest gypsum company after merging with USG in 2019. This new plant underscores the company's ongoing expansion and dedication to the Canadian market.
