A 19-year-old man is dead following a collision between a gravel truck and an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) in Manitoba, according to RCMP. The crash occurred on Tuesday afternoon on Highway 6 near St. Laurent, approximately 80 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.
Details of the Incident
RCMP responded to the scene at around 2:30 p.m. local time. Preliminary investigation indicates that the gravel truck was travelling southbound when it struck the ATV, which was attempting to cross the highway. The driver of the ATV, a 19-year-old man from the St. Laurent area, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the gravel truck, a 45-year-old man, was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” said RCMP Corporal Julie Courchaine in a statement. “We are working to determine the exact circumstances that led to this tragic incident.”
Investigation Ongoing
RCMP have closed a section of Highway 6 for several hours to allow for collision reconstruction and evidence collection. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are asking any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact the RCMP’s St. Laurent detachment.
Traffic was diverted to alternate routes while the highway was closed. The highway has since reopened. RCMP have not released the name of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.
Safety Reminder
This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of ATVs on public roads. In Manitoba, ATVs are required to be registered and insured, and operators must hold a valid driver’s licence. RCMP urge all motorists to exercise caution, especially at intersections and when crossing highways.
