Over 300 athletes participated in the Marathon of Sport on Saturday at Mount Royal University in Calgary, bringing together Special Olympics athletes, local businesses, and volunteers for a day of sports and fundraising.

Event Highlights

The event featured a variety of sports including basketball, soccer, and track and field, with participants competing in a friendly atmosphere. Organizers emphasized the importance of inclusion and community support for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

According to Stephen Hunt, the event coordinator, the Marathon of Sport aims to raise funds for Special Olympics programs across Alberta. “This event showcases the incredible talent and determination of our athletes while bringing the community together,” Hunt said.

Community and Business Support

Local businesses sponsored teams and provided volunteers, helping to create a festive environment. Volunteers assisted with event logistics, coaching, and cheering on participants. The fundraiser also included a silent auction and food vendors.

“We are grateful for the overwhelming support from Calgary businesses and volunteers,” said a Special Olympics Alberta spokesperson. “Their contributions ensure that our athletes have the resources they need to train and compete.”

Impact and Future Plans

The Marathon of Sport is part of a larger effort to promote inclusion through sports. Organizers hope to expand the event next year, attracting more participants and sponsors. Funds raised will go toward equipment, travel, and training for Special Olympics athletes.

“Sports have the power to break down barriers,” Hunt added. “This event is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together.”
