UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service officers seized approximately $14,000 worth of cocaine during a drug bust on M'Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island, leading to charges against three individuals.
Details of the Seizure
The bust occurred as part of an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking in the region. Police executed a search warrant at a residence on the First Nation, uncovering a quantity of cocaine with an estimated street value of $14,000. Investigators also seized cash and other items indicative of drug trafficking.
Three suspects, whose identities have not been released pending court appearances, face charges including possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. They were taken into custody and are scheduled to appear in a Sudbury court.
Community Impact
UCCM Anishnaabe Police Chief Kevin Nanibush emphasized the importance of such operations in protecting the community. “Drug trafficking poses a serious threat to the safety and well-being of our communities,” he said. “We will continue to work diligently to remove these dangerous substances from our streets.”
The bust is part of broader efforts by law enforcement to combat the flow of illegal drugs into Northern Ontario, where opioid and cocaine abuse have been ongoing concerns. According to police, the investigation remains active, and further charges may be laid.
