NSLC's Safe Rides Program Offers Free Halifax Transit

The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) is offering free transit rides on Halifax Transit buses this Friday night as part of its Safe Rides program. The initiative aims to provide a safe transportation option for residents and visitors, reducing the risk of impaired driving during evening hours.

Program Details

From 6 p.m. on Friday until 2 a.m. on Saturday, all Halifax Transit bus routes will be free of charge. The program covers the entire municipal transit system, including conventional buses and Access-A-Bus services. No special passes or tickets are required; riders can simply board any bus and ride without fare.

According to the NSLC, the Safe Rides program has been running for several years and is part of the corporation's commitment to social responsibility. “We want everyone to enjoy their night out and get home safely,” said an NSLC spokesperson. The program is funded by the NSLC and coordinated with Halifax Transit.

Impact and Community Response

The Safe Rides program is particularly relevant during summer months when social activities increase. Halifax Transit typically sees higher ridership on Friday evenings, and the free service aims to encourage people to choose public transit over driving after consuming alcohol.

Local officials have praised the initiative. “This program helps keep our roads safe and supports responsible choices,” said a Halifax regional councillor. The program also aligns with broader efforts to reduce impaired driving incidents in the province. In 2025, Nova Scotia reported 42 impaired driving-related fatalities, according to Statistics Canada.

How to Use the Service

Riders can use any Halifax Transit bus route during the designated hours. No proof of participation is needed, and the service is available to everyone, regardless of age or residency. The NSLC encourages people to plan their trips ahead using the Halifax Transit app or website.

The Safe Rides program is one of several initiatives by the NSLC to promote responsible consumption. Others include server training and awareness campaigns about the dangers of impaired driving.
