Ford Motor Company demonstrated its latest anti-theft technologies on Tuesday in Toronto, showcasing features designed to deter the city's surging vehicle theft rates. The automaker's demonstration included engine immobilizers, steering wheel locks, and GPS-based tracking systems that can alert owners and police in real time.
Features on Display
The event, held at a Ford dealership in North York, highlighted the company's SecuriLock system, which prevents the engine from starting without the correct key. Other features included a perimeter alarm and a remote shutdown capability that allows owners to disable their vehicle via smartphone. According to Ford Canada spokesperson Lauren More, the company has invested over $100 million in anti-theft research and development in the past two years.
"We understand that car theft is a major concern for Toronto residents," More said. "These features are designed to make our vehicles harder to steal and give owners peace of mind."
Rising Theft Rates
Toronto police reported a 45% increase in vehicle thefts in 2025 compared to the previous year, with over 12,000 vehicles stolen. The problem has become so severe that the city launched a task force in January to combat organized theft rings. Police Chief Myron Demkiw said that many stolen vehicles are shipped overseas or used in other crimes.
"We are working closely with automakers to stay ahead of thieves," Demkiw said. "Technology like this can be a game-changer."
Industry Response
Other automakers, including General Motors and Toyota, have also introduced enhanced security features. However, Ford's demonstration was the first public showing of such technologies in Toronto. The company plans to offer the anti-theft package as a standard option on all 2027 models sold in Canada.
"We want to make sure our customers feel safe," More added. "This is just the beginning."
