The City of Windsor celebrated the grand opening of its new Innovation District in the downtown core on June 24, 2026. The district, a collaborative effort between the city, local businesses, and educational institutions, is designed to foster technology startups, research, and entrepreneurship.
What the Innovation District Offers
The district features co-working spaces, labs, and meeting areas for innovators and entrepreneurs. According to Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens, the project aims to attract talent and investment to the region. “This district will be a catalyst for economic growth and job creation in Windsor,” Dilkens said during the opening ceremony.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to diversify Windsor’s economy beyond manufacturing and automotive sectors. The district will house incubators, accelerators, and provide access to mentorship and funding opportunities.
Community and Economic Impact
Local officials estimate the district could create over 1,000 jobs in the next five years. The University of Windsor and St. Clair College have partnered to offer programs and internships within the district. “We are building a pipeline for students to turn ideas into businesses,” said Dr. Robert Gordon, president of the University of Windsor.
The district also aims to revitalize downtown Windsor by attracting foot traffic and new businesses. Several tech companies have already committed to leasing space in the district.
