Executive chef Dave Godsoe, who oversees several leading ByWard Market restaurants, is stepping down in mid-May. The 35-year-old chef announced his departure on Instagram, with his last day set for May 15.
Godsoe has been with the Eighteen Hospitality Group for nearly a decade, starting as chef of their flagship Restaurant E18hteen on York Street. Over time, his role expanded to include oversight of Social, Sidedoor, the Clarendon Tavern, and the Hyde Bar. He also served as the group's food and beverage director, managing kitchen and front-of-house teams of about 140 people.
In an interview, Godsoe said, "Overall, it's time. I've been there going on 10 years. That's a long time. It's not an easy decision. It just felt like it was the right time for me to step away." He expressed gratitude to Caroline Gosselin and Peter Boole of the Eighteen Hospitality group for taking a chance on him a decade ago.
Godsoe reflected on his growth, stating, "I learned so much. I was given lots of space to grow and learn and become a better chef and a better leader." He collaborated with chefs de cuisine at each restaurant to develop menus.
While Godsoe has considered opening his own restaurant, he ruled it out for now due to financial instability and his young family. "Maybe when there's a little more financial stability in the economy. It's not a financial risk I'm willing to take right now," he said.
A new senior leadership role awaits Godsoe in June, though he declined to provide details. He confirmed he will remain part of the Ottawa restaurant scene.
Godsoe grew up in Riverside South and graduated from Algonquin College's culinary program in 2011. By age 26, he was leading Restaurant E18hteen, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. A summer party is planned for the milestone, and Godsoe hopes to attend.
"It's been an icon in the city for a long time," he said. "A lot of the big names in this city owe some of their story to E18hteen."
