Plans have been unveiled for a new YMCA-Calgary Public Library complex in the emerging West District of Calgary, a project deemed essential for the underserved area. The facility will require $90 million in funding to open by late 2029 or early 2030.
Project Details and Location
The proposed complex will be built on land donated by developer Truman at Broadcast Avenue and 78 Street S.W. It will follow the model of other YMCA-library combinations in the city, offering a 60,000-square-foot YMCA facility alongside a 9,000-square-foot library space.
Shannon Doram, President and CEO of YMCA Calgary, emphasized the need for such a facility: "We know this part of Calgary is underserved in terms of recreation, so this is an opportunity for Calgarians to engage in physical activity, learning and development all under one roof."
Library Integration and Community Benefits
Calgary Public Library CEO Sarah Meilleur noted the library's presence is overdue in the rapidly growing area. "This is a rapidly-growing area of the city — you can see all the development behind me, and our Signal Hill library is oversubscribed," she said. "So we're really excited for the potential of this project to bring recreation and library facilities to this growing community."
Meilleur highlighted the natural synergy between recreation and library services: "Having families and community come, they can take their kids to swim lessons, then head over to the library for story time and to check out books."
Funding and Timeline
The project's design is still in the planning stages, which will determine the final cost. Proponents aim to raise $90 million from three levels of government and philanthropic contributions. Doram expressed optimism, noting discussions with the City of Calgary, the provincial government, and the federal government, all of whom support new infrastructure for community building. If funds are secured, the facility is expected to be completed by late 2029 or early 2030.
Context and Growth
Calgary already houses the world's two largest YMCAs: the Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton (330,000 square feet) and the Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge (284,000 square feet). The Calgary Public Library, one of North America's largest systems, has over 815,000 members and seven million annual visits across 22 locations. It is currently developing three new branches at Belmont, Walden, and Symons Valley, adding 35,000 square feet of library space. The goal is to achieve 0.3 square feet of library space per capita in the city, a target still far off but progressing.
Design and Architecture
The prime consultant for the project is GEC Architects, known for designing the Remington YMCA at Quarry Park, the Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary, and WinSport's Markin MacPhail Centre. Partner Andrew Tankard noted that the template from existing complementary library-recreation centres will guide the design, which is expected to be "very urban and very compact." He added, "When you look at West District, obviously there's a new community being built here and having that community centre would be a fantastic addition."
