Zellers continues its Canadian comeback with plans to open a new store at Tecumseh Mall this July, marking the brand's return to the location it once called home more than a decade ago.
Expansion Following Edmonton Success
The Windsor store is one of two new Ontario locations announced this week by the discount retailer. There are plans for a Toronto outlet opening June 18. Officials from the company say the expansion follows the successful relaunch of the Canadian store with the opening of its Edmonton location in late 2025 and reflects growing demand for the revived brand, according to a company news release.
New Ownership and Rapid Growth
Quebec-based retailer Les Ailes de la Mode Inc. bought the Zellers brand from the now bankrupt Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in August 2025. The new owner has moved quickly to reestablish the brand, starting with the opening of an Edmonton location in October last year.
Joey Benitah, Zellers chief operating officer, said: "Following the incredible response we saw in Edmonton, we're excited to bring Zellers back to Ontario in a meaningful way."
Product Offerings and Store Features
The new Windsor location will feature apparel, home goods, accessories, seasonal products and an expanded toy department. As part of the company's expanded product offerings, the stores will feature select snacks, beverages and specialty foods. These include items like flavoured popcorn, candies and sweet treats, international chips, better-for-you snacks, and a convenient assortment of grab-and-go drinks, according to the company's news release.
Zellers also plans to introduce a variety of Italian grocery items, including candies, wafers, pasta, sauces, olives, and oils. All of it a part of a "broader focus to expand food, snack, and confectionery offerings in a more significant way over time," officials said.
Community Reception
Tecumseh Mall owners are also welcoming Zellers' return, "marking a great new chapter for both our property and the greater Windsor community," according to Katarina Taylor, general manager of Europro's Windsor Properties, owners of Tecumseh Mall. "Our shoppers have always remembered the brand fondly, so this reopening is a genuinely meaningful moment for everyone involved," she said.
