Brantford Landlords Penalized for Unsafe Housing Conditions
Multiple landlords in Brantford have been fined after inspections revealed serious health and safety violations, including leaks, mould, and walls patched with cardboard. The penalties come after tenant complaints prompted municipal enforcement actions.
According to city officials, the properties were found to have extensive water damage, leading to mould growth that posed respiratory risks. In one unit, walls were repaired with cardboard, which fails to meet fire safety and structural standards. The landlords were ordered to pay fines totaling over $50,000 and must complete necessary repairs within 60 days.
Tenant Advocacy Groups Respond
Local tenant advocacy groups have praised the enforcement, noting that such conditions are far too common in rental housing. "No one should live in a home with mould and cardboard walls," said a spokesperson for the Brantford Tenants' Union. "We hope these fines send a clear message that landlords must provide safe and habitable housing."
City's Commitment to Housing Standards
The City of Brantford has ramped up inspections in response to rising complaints. "Our priority is the safety and well-being of residents," said a city inspector. "We will continue to hold landlords accountable for maintaining their properties."
Tenants experiencing similar issues are encouraged to contact the city's housing enforcement division. The fines collected will be directed toward affordable housing initiatives.
