Rise in Heavy Equipment Bank Robberies
This heist is not the first time heavy construction equipment has been used to rob a bank in the Greater Toronto Area. In November 2025, a backhoe was used to breach a wall at a bank near Rexdale Blvd. and Islington Ave. in Etobicoke. Earlier, in June 2025, a failed attempt to breach a Scarborough bank at Port Union and Lawson Rds. left an excavator behind in the wreckage. In March 2025, an excavator was also used to damage a wall and steal an ATM from a Woodbridge bank. Additionally, on Dec. 31, 2024, a TD Bank at the corner of Bathurst St. and Lawrence Ave. was damaged in a similar fashion when an excavator was used to steal an ATM.
Police continue to investigate these brazen crimes, which highlight a troubling trend of using heavy machinery for bank robberies. The public is reminded to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
